Electronics Health & Safety

Electricity Can Kill

Electricity is potentially hazardous and should be treated with the utmost of care.  Electricity has the potential to kill. Remember:-

  • Always work under the supervision of a qualified adult

  • Do not experiment with mains electrical equipment

  • Only use electrical equipment that is correctly safety tagged to show that it has been tested

  • Never mix water with electricity - including water on wet hands

  • Use correctly insulated tools and work on an insulated bench top (not a metal one)

Electrical Fires

Only tackle a fire if:-

  • you think it is small enough to put out - don't overestimate the power of even a large extinguisher

  • there is no personal danger

  • you have raised the alarm

In College, or if the fire is too large:-

  • quickly and quietly leave the room

  • shut the door behind you to prevent the spread of fire, smoke, fumes and gases

Types of Fire Extinguisher

Do not use

  • Water - conducts electricity and is unsuitable for electrical fires

  • Foam - smothers the flames in a foam containing carbon dioxide but also contains water

Do use

  • Carbon Dioxide - smothers the fire in inert gas and starves it of oxygen

  • Dry Powder - good on confined fires but should be avoided on larger fires

  • Fire Blanket - made from aluminiumised glass fibre

  • Sand - this can spread liquids that are on fires

Always check an extinguisher is full before you tackle a fire.  Make sure that you have raised the alarm and test fired the extinguisher before attacking the base of the blaze in a sweeping fashion.
