ATHLETES WITH DISABILITIES
Peninsula encourages
all students in affiliated schools to participate in Regional Sporting events.
In order to progress beyond this level however, AWD students need to correctly
classified. Please read the classification information section.

INFORMATION
Classification Enquiries - Physical Impairment
Here is a basic
list of disabilities that usually fall into the physical disability
("functional") system:
- cerebral palsy
(unless so mild is has no physical effect)
- spinal injury,
or spinal conditions such as spina bifida
- scoliosis
sometimes does, if very severe
- amputations
(minimum is usually at the wrist or ankle, but some lesser combinations
might be worth assessing)
- small stature
(dwarfism)
Other disabilities
depend on the severity, or the way in which the athlete is affected. Sometimes
they are eligible, sometimes not:
- muscle/nerve
conditions like Freidrich's Ataxia, muscular dystrophy, spinomuscular
atrophy, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis
- Osteogenisis
imperfecta (there are lots of degrees; the milder versions don't always
qualify)
- Erb's palsy /
brachial plexus lesion
- Scoliosis
- Club feet
- "low
tone" conditions (undiagnosed conditions are rarely eligible)
Overall, if the
athlete is unable to compete equally with able-bodied peers, because of a
physical disability or condition, it's worth pursuing a classification. The
provisional system (available on the Sporting
Wheelies website) is available to anyone in Qld, at no charge , and can then
inform the athlete and their parents/teachers/coach whether that avenue is
available to them.
